My name is Leila Alli and I was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I’ve always lived closed to the ocean and since I was a child I used to spent a lot of time on the beach either swimming, playing volleyball, racketball or bodysurfing with my sisters and my dad.
I started bodyboarding in 1985, when on a hot summer afternoon I saw a friend leaving the beach with bodyboard under his arms. It was a Morey 139 and had handles on it, I asked him if I could try and he taught me the first lesson on how to ride a wave. Since that day I got hooked on bodyboarding and never stopped!
I have turned professional in 1991 after returning from an international event in Australia and I’ve been competing on the Women’s World Tour since1995 always finishing amongst the top 10 in the world.
One of the highlights of my competitive career was obtaining the only two straight 10 point rides (30 points score) at the World Championship at Pipeline, Hawaii , with a Backdoor tube and a Pipeline tube. I was super stoked!
Some of the media highlights of my career include several covers of international magazines such as 3 times cover of Flipper and YoYo magazine in Japan, twice cover of Style and Trip magazines in Brazil, as well as twice cover of Flipper Annual calendar and numerous photos printed in French, Spanish, English, American and Australian publications.
